Harvest Your Big Dream

I just came home from a conference where the theme was - Dream Big! One of the exercises they asked everyone to do was to fill out a postcard with their big dream on it and they were displayed on a giant 'cork-board' display. I spent some time looking at them and came to the realization that not many people know how to Dream Big!

We all know people who have had their dreams become reality. You know the type - we all do! They say that in 5 years they will be doing something and then 5 years later - they are! Are you thinking right now, why can't that be me? Like many of the people who wrote out their dreams at the conference I attended, most people I know actually don't have a clue what they want out of life - and you certainly can't figure that out in 5 minutes with 5000 people walking around.

Here's what I think. I believe that dreaming big is difficult for most people because they are not willing to give themselves the freedom to dream. Dreams need to be harvested.

It is interesting to me that when we are kids, we don't hesitate to dream big. We see the world as having no limitations on following our passions. One day we are dreaming about being an astronaut and the next day it is a teacher. As we get older we seem to have a very narrow focus on what is actually possible for ourselves. We create barriers that the world has led us to believe exist for us. We forget how to dream big.

You have to train yourself how to harvest your dreams. To begin, you need to free your mind of all limitations and distractions. Don't think about anything that could restrict your dream from happening. Don't think about relationship worries, money, to-do lists, etc. Clear your mind and don't think of anything. Now, visualize your perfect life in 5, 10, 15 years from now. What would it look like? What would you be doing? What special events would there be? Who would be in your life? How would you feel? Remember - absolutely no limitations. What would your vision of your most amazing life look like? That is how you begin to harvest your dreams!

Write them down and do this exercise regularly. The more you allow yourself to dream, the easier it becomes to figure out where you need to focus your energy. Your subconscious mind will just naturally begin to take you there. Thinking about your dreams will get easier the more you do it and you will be able to come up with great detail for your dreams. When you are diligent about writing them down, you will be able to develop a path to achieving them and those are called goals. As you start hitting your goals, that allows you to see the possibility that you can actually make your big dream happen. Those folks who always seem to live their dreams - they are no different than you or me. They just allow themselves to dream big on a regular basis. They have mastered the art of harvesting their dreams, and guess what? You can do it too!

Lesson: Big dreamers don't see limitations - they only see possibilities.
