Are You Root Bound?

I love to read inspiring quotes and think on the lessons that can be learned from them. Today someone shared a thought that said: "Be the best you can be right where you are." I didn't think much of it until I was reading a success story posted by one of the Beachbody Coaches that I work with. This was someone who was forced out of their comfort zone and decided to take a risk and become a person they never thought they were. I started thinking about how sure, you can 'bloom where you are planted' but can you really grow to be the best that you are capable of if you stay in the same spot? Hmmm....flowers and planting ...made me think about gardening.

I love to garden and now that I live in an apartment in Santa Monica with only a rooftop deck and a couple of balconies, I don't have the luxury of an expansive garden like I did in NY. I have to have everything in pots. Initially you don't want to put a plant in a pot that is too big otherwise it looks funny. You find an appropriately sized pot that compliments the plant. As the plant grows it will eventually outgrow its pot and become root bound. A plant is root bound when its roots take up all the space in the pot, or nearly all the space. The roots are matted and tangled and often form a mass that cannot be separated without cutting the roots apart. If left in a root bound state, the plant will eventually suffocate and die. Kind of made me think about growth and achieving success.

If you look at the most successful people in our lives, chances are that they are continually getting 're-potted' into bigger pots. Yes, they are the best that they can be in the moment, but they realize when they are getting 'root bound'. They move into a situation where they can continue to grow and be healthy and vibrant in a way that feeds their vision and passion.

Getting 're-potted' can be scary for sure. Think about it - all your roots are exposed for a short time and you have to acclimate to a new environment. Some plants will even go through a period of 'shock' and might lose some leaves. But overall it is an environment that is full of nutrients and opportunity. This is life, sometimes we need to be exposed and vulnerable for a brief time so that we have the ability to show how truly beautiful we can be.

So go ahead and 'be the best you can be where you are' but be on the lookout for that bigger pot and don't be afraid to move into it, because chances are you have a lot more blooming to do!

Are you 'root bound' where you are? What are you going to do about it?

Lesson Learned: Sometimes we have to move to a bigger 'pot' so we can be the best of who we are meant to become.

Be Great!
